Easy homemade play dough
Non-toxic and easy to make with just a few ingredients.

Play Dough Recipe
Ingredients:
1 cup of plain flour
1 teaspoon of cream of tartar
1/3 cup warm water
1 teaspoon of vegetable oil
2 tablespoons of food colouring (amount varies depending on colour - lighter colours may need more)
Instructions:
Mix flour and cream of tartar together in a bowl.
In a separate bowl, mix water and food colouring.
Create a well in the centre of the flour and pour in the water/food colouring mixture.
Add the vegetable oil.
Mix together and then knead on a floured surface for a few minutes.
If the dough feels very wet or sticky, add a small amount of flour at a time until it comes together.
Allow to rest for 20 minutes - the dough will become softer and brighter.
Store in an airtight container - it will keep for a few days.
Please note: As this recipe does not contain salt, it is important to check it for signs of mould before each use.
Play dough tips
Rolling pins which are one solid piece and require you to roll your palm over them strengthen the arches of the palm which are required for writing.
Stamps and tools which require a pincer grip are great for developing fine motor and pre-writing skills.
Toddlers often find cutting play dough less frustrating than cutting paper, so it's a great time to practice using scissors.
